Zeller alternatives: which plans beat a 1.4% flat rate?

Updated

Zeller’s 1.4% covers every card, Amex included, with no rental. That was competitive before 1 October. Since then two big banks cut their flat rates below 1%, so the question is at what volume each of them wins.

Verdict

CommBank’s Smart Mini costs less than Zeller at any volume. The rented bank terminals win once takings are high enough to cover their rental: Westpac from about $4,256 a month, NAB from about $7,474. SumUp costs the same; Square and Stripe cost more. Zeller’s edge is that it pays into any bank the next business day and charges no rental in quiet months.

What you give up by leaving Zeller

Zeller settles the next business day into any bank account you nominate, free, with no set-up fee, monthly fee or lock-in contract, and charges Amex at the same rate as other cards. (Zeller pricing, checked )

The banks pay fastest into their own accounts, and CommBank’s online Smart Mini application settles to a CommBank account. Westpac’s rate doesn’t cover Amex, and CommBank covers it subject to approval. If you take phone orders, compare those rates too:
