Card fees for florists
Updated
Many florist orders arrive by phone or online, which are priced differently from a tap at the counter, and the year has a few enormous weeks. Both change how you should read a rate card.
On the example numbers
For counter sales at the example florist, Westpac EFTPOS Now is the cheapest plan we compare at $2,770 a year. On a 1.6% flat rate, an $85 bouquet needs $1.27 more to cover card fees.
The example business, at three sizes
Worked figures for a florist taking $25,000 a month by card at an $85 average, with 92% of sales by card. Card mix: eftpos 28%, Visa/Mastercard debit 30%, Visa/Mastercard credit 33%, Amex 6%, Overseas cards 3%. These are illustrative inputs, not an industry average; change them in the calculator to match your statement.
Fees a year for the example, by plan and monthly card takings
| Plan | $10,000 a month | $25,000 a month | $50,000 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Westpac EFTPOS Now | $1,2861.07% | $2,7700.92% | $5,2420.87% |
| CommBank Smart Mini | $1,1880.99% | $2,9700.99% | $5,9400.99% |
| CommBank Smart terminal | $1,5421.29% | $3,3241.11% | $6,2941.05% |
| Worldline Move 5000 | $1,5361.28% | $3,3901.13% | $6,4811.08% |
| Square Reader (Free plan) | $1,9201.60% | $4,8001.60% | $9,6001.60% |
A small florist at $10,000 a month of counter sales does best on CommBank's Smart Mini ($1,188 a year); Westpac overtakes it at about $14,928 a month on this mix. Phone orders don't count towards that crossover if they go through a different system, so use only the takings that pass through the terminal.
Phone and online orders cost more
Orders taken over the phone or through your website aren't in-person card payments, so providers charge them at different rates:
- Zeller, phone and mail orders (moto): 1.7% including GST (Zeller pricing, checked )
- Square, keyed-in, card on file and virtual terminal: 2.2% (Square pricing, checked )
- SumUp, payment links: 2.10% (SumUp pricing, checked )
- Stripe, online, domestic cards: 1.65% + 30c including GST (Stripe pricing, checked )
The calculator prices in-person payments. If a third of your takings are phone orders, price that third separately at these rates and add it to the result. A provider with a cheap counter rate and a dear phone rate can lose to one that is the other way round.
Peak weeks and rented terminals
Valentine's Day and Mother's Day can each bring weeks of takings in a few days. Percentage fees rise with sales, so a peak doesn't change which plan is cheaper; your average month does. Use a year's card takings divided by twelve, not your best month.
Deliveries paid on the doorstep
A driver taking payment at the door needs a reader that works on a phone signal, which every phone-paired reader we compare does. The rate is the in-person rate, because the card is present.
CommBank's Smart Mini pairs with a phone or tablet over Bluetooth and costs $59 outright. (CommBank Smart Mini, checked )
